Abiword on windows uses a spell checker engine called ispell.
It is very old and known to not to give the best suggestions.
The Linux versions of abiword have the option to use other spellchecker
engines and aspell is supposed to give much better suggestions than
ispell.
There is not a whole lot that can be done to improve the
ispell spellchecker.
I'm not sure what the developers plans our but I believe some of them
would like to drop ispell in favour of more modern spell checkers.
Hopefully someone else can provide a more detailed response

I don't see any duplicates, they probably got trapped and dealt with by
the list admin.
