Actually it's what it sounds like - instead of typing in the middle of
text inserting characters, it overwrites them. Press the Insert key on
your keyboard and try to type within text, and you'll quickly learn what
it is. It's been a fairly standard thing since long ago (DOS) but is
less popular now with mice and such - in fact, Thunderbird, in which I
am writing this email, has it disabled.
