Hi Jack,
Are you sure it uninstalled KDE, and not simply that GDM doesn't know it's there? If it's still there you should find the option somewhere in the GDM configurator (usually available at the login, otherwise, there's an application under the menu). The problem being that if it doesn't know KDE is an option at all, you're going to have to find some way of pointing it out (which I haven't done in literally years, so, I can't tell you how).
In general, with the makink of software, you might consider sending output to a log file (very, very good idea).
