Thanks for the suggestion, Hub. It worked, but the result was not quite
what I intended. The procedure was roughly this, just in case someone
else wants to try. (Actually I went through a much messier sequence,
which I won't bother describing, before I figured out the right things
to do).
This was based in part on information in:
http://debianplanet.org/node.php?id=924
http://lists.debian.org/debian-user/2003/debian-user-200302/msg03865.html
I added to the /etc/sources.list file the line
deb
http://ftp.acc.umu.se/mirror/mirrors.evilgeniuses.org.uk/debian/backports/woody/
gnome2.2/
I removed the 1.99.3 packages that I had previously attempted to install
(which were the .rpm files from the Abiword site converted to .deb
using alien):
dpkg -r abiword abiword-clipart abiword-embeddable
abiword-plugins-impexp abiword-plugins-tools
Then,
apt-get update
apt-get install gnome-core gdm gtk2-engines*
apt-get install abiword abiword-common aspell-en libaspell15 libfribidi0
This installed Abiword 1.9.1, but unfortunately also uninstalled KDE,
upgraded Gnome to 2.2, upgraded X to 4.2.1, and made Gnome the default
desktop environment. If I now updated Abiword to 1.99.3 using the rpms
from the Abiword site, I expect that all the needed libraries would be
there. Unfortunately my system now is not really Woody any more! So
I'm probably going to try downgrading to pure Woody, then try upgrading
to Abiword 1.99.3, perhaps using the Sid packages, as someone else has
suggested on this list.
All I can say is, I'm getting plenty of experience with apt-get!
Jack
