I install Abiword via apt-get, no problems on the install.

When I try to run it, I get:

Abiword could not load the following font or fontset from the X Window
    System display server:
    [-*-helvetica-medium-r-*-*-*-100-*-*-*-*-*-*]

The Abi font path is included in both the XFree86-4 config file, and the
    xfs config file.
Also, I deleted the ~/.Abi* directory, and made sure the needed modules
    were loaded into X.
Basiclly, I followed every troubleshooting tip I found on abiword's
    site, and relevant google searches.

My next attempt was to install the true type font, and I followed the
directions exactly as the abiword how-to states to install them.
However, I still get the same error. I looks like it is searching for a
Helvetica font that does not exist. Isn't Abiword supposed to supply
the all the needed Abi fonts (aside from the X fonts, of course)? I
thought that New Times Roman was supported to be the default font?
