It is obvious to me since subscribing that this list is very low volume. I
note that occasionally a developer will reply, but not to all pending
requests for help. At first I thought that development must have stopped on
Abiword, but after browsing the developer list I see that it is very active.
I further noted that there seemed to be a great deal of concern for the user.
So I am wondering: why does this concern not manifest in replies to user
    requests for help?

    Using this URL:

    http://www.abisource.com/help/en-US/problems/problemsfonts.html#unix_x

    (1), (2) and (3) appear to work
    (4) "Now you need to set up the fonts.scale and fonts.dir files for this
directory. You will need the program ttmkfdir for that, and you will find
details of how to do that in the program's documentation and your
    distribution's documentation.... "

What about the fonts.dir and fonts.scale files that already exist in
/usr/share/AbiSource/fonts ? I am only trying to add ttf fonts. I want to
keep the AbiSource fonts. I temporarily renamed the existing fonts.dir and
fonts.scale files while running (4), then merged the contents and renamed
    back.

    (5) " Now change to the bin subdirectory of the AbiSuite directory, and
    execute the following command:

     # cd /usr/share/AbiSuite/bin
     # ./ttftool -e print"

There is no /usr/share/AbiSuite/bin directory in my installation. I compiled
    from source:
    ./configure --prefix=/usr
    make
    make install

The ttftool executable does however exist in /usr/bin and appears to work: my
encodings are present in the printout.

    (6) and (7) appear to work

However, now, when attempting to start AbiWord I get the big error message:
"AbiWord could not load the following font or fontset from the X window System
    display server: [-*-Times New Roman-regular-...etc."
This is an AbiSource font that is now killing the startup.
If I remove the ttf font that I just added from fonts.dir and fonts.scale,
    then AbiWord starts correctly again.

I am using XFree86-4.2 and Load "type1" already exists in my Module section of
/etc/X11/XFree86-4.2. I have tried your documentation. In places where it
is unclear I guessed several times.

I also tried the instructions here:

    http://www.abisource.com/twiki/bin/view/Abiword/UnixFaqTrueTypeFonts

My experience with this set of instructions was outlined in a previous post.

I have also read the archives back to June 2002 and tried what little was
    there.
