No, you don't have to keep AbiWord off your machine.
The process goes something like this:
Right-click a word processing file and select "Open with..."
You'll be presented with a list of word processing and other programs on
your system. Select the program you want, and also click the checkbox
that says something like "always use this program for this type of
file," then click OK.
That should fix the problem.
FWIW, I've had LibreOffice exhibit this same "bullying" behavior on XP
systems where the only other word processor was WordPad. LibreOffice
would open .rtf files even though WordPad had been specified as the
default. The problem seemed to go away when a .rtf file created in
WordPad was stored in the user's directory.
