It is definitely not necessary but it makes collaboration *possible*
for 99% of the computer using public.
The collaborative feature was essentially unused in the 2.6 cycle
except for OLPC Write.
All the code in AbiWord is GPL version 2+. Anyone is free to write
their own collaboration enabling technology.
It is really *hard* for people to find each other on the internet. The
webservice is our attempt to make this possible and to push the
boundaries of what is possible for computers.
