In Word 2003, there's a "Remove personal information from file
properties on save" checkbox in Tools > Options > Security (note: it
seems to be reset on new documents). There's also an add-in that
removes hidden data:

Actually, AbiWord may import some file properties from Word documents,
including author name. You can clear this information in File >
Properties. A quick test seems to indicate that the doc/rtf exporter
doesn't save this information, but you should probably clear it
anyway, if you're worried.
