Ok, I've added the Keyboard Indicator applets in both GNOME and XFCE. In GNOME, there are two applets on the panel. One says USA, and the other looks like a keyboard-- I clicked on it and saw a pull-down menu with languages--once. Then it stopped working. When I click on it, nothing happens, no pulldown menu appears, and the other still says USA.

I can right-click to open SCIM, where I can enable and disable the different layouts. They are all enabled by default.

In XFCE, it's similar. I have a US flag that I click on, and nothing happens.

[edit] Ok, here's the procedure:

Right-click the keyboard layout switcher applet--the one that says USA or is a flag, NOT the one that looks like a keyboard.

In the pulldown menu, select preferences.

In the dialog that opens, click the Layouts tab.

Click the "+ADD" button.

In the dialog that opens, scroll down the menu on the left and select the language you want.

Click OK.

You're back to the first dialog, Select a default if you like, and click Close.

Now you can toggle back and forth by clicking the Keyboard Switcher applet. I believe you can also open up Preferences again, and click on the Layout Options tab to select a key to use for switching.

Open up Abiword, and when you use the non-US keyboard, all you see is dots on the screen. In OpenOffice 2.2, the characters appear as expected.

I still can't use Abiword for Thai, but at least I can use Open Office. I'm ok with using OO every once in awhile for certain things, and Abiword as the main workhorse. If you want to have only Abiword, then a fix is still needed. I will continue to poke around.
