Fedora Core 6
abiword-2.4.6-1.fc6
I just installed the Adobe "Type Basics" Type 1 font set (available from
adobe but not free - http://www.adobe.com/type/browser/P/P_934.html )
It includes the Base35 postscript fonts plus some others.
I didn't buy them to use in AbiWord, but I thought I'd look at how they
compare with the knockoffs.
Helvetica did not look so good. Too much space between the characters.
So I tested it against Arial and Nimbus Sans L. The spacing was
identical but they were wider characters.
I printed to PDF (via the AbiWord print menu) - and looked at the fonts
in the PDF - the PDF is using Helvetica Narrow and not Helvetica. But
the spacing seems to be for regular Helvetica.
I also noticed that Helvetica Narrow is NOT in the font menu (but Arial
Narrow and Nimbus Sans L Narrow both are in the font menu) so it seems
that either fontconfig or AbiWord are confused by the Helvetica fonts.
Is this an abiword bug, a fontconfig bug, or what?
Arial is ttf from core web
Arial Narrow (not used in test) is ttf from an old Microsoft Font Pack
for Windows
The Nimbus Sans L fonts are from the URW rpm in Fedora.
Is there anything I can do to help identify why Helvetica Narrow is used
when Helvetica is asked for?
