If you are making the document for printing POD then downsample your high
definition photos to 300 dpi. If you are considering offset then use no more
than 600 dpi. If the documents are for online then resolution should be no
more than 75 dpi. Any higher resolution is simply wasted.
You can use Gimp or Photoshop to downsample. If you use Gimp and the target is
print then you need to save them as ppm and then run them through
pnmtotiffcmyk to get them back into cmyk form. Gimp only emits documents in
rgb culor model.
