In a nutshell, you need to edit your config file. What this file is
called depends on whether you use Windows or Linux. In Linux it
is /home/your_username/.Abiword/AbiWord.Profile. in Windows I believe
that it is C:\Documents and Settings\ Your User Name \AbiSuite\PROFILE.

But it is a simple edit - you simply add the line
DefaultSaveFormat=".doc" to your <scheme> section.
