I had a quick check through bugzilla to see if I could find a request for
this but I'm almost certain it is not a feature of Abiword. Further
looking through bugzilla might turn up something more relevant.
More advanced page layout features like this are not something you might
expect to find in a Word processor and are more likely to find in a
Desktop Publishing application such as Scribus.

If you only plan on doing different layout for one or two cover pages or
other special pages then using seperate files might be one way to work
around the problem and achieve the results you are looking for.
