I could go into a long discussion about how GTK+ works
on X11 and how (and why) it doesn't respect old
XIntrinsics directives like "-fc", how X11 font
selection is broken (long live fontconfig and xft2!),
and etc. but that'd be boring and outside the scope of
this list.

I could explain how to use gnome-font-properties, but
you'll just tell me that you're not using GNOME. And
it's outside the scope of this mailing list.

I could talk about how to edit your .gtkrc, but that's
longish and also outside the scope of this mailing
list. Plus, it's syntax-heavy, so I'd probably screw
something up.

But instead, my answer is:

c) I know several options that might be palatable to
you, but they're probably not exhaustive, I'll
probably screw something up, and you may not like the
answers you hear. Instead, here's where to look for
your answer. Pick the one that works best for you.

People have already answered the question better than
I could ever do. Googling for something like "gtk
font", for instance, might be useful.
