You shouldn't need to replace it but rather add more dictionaries for
other languages, in this case deutsch.hash for German spelling.

The Spelling FAQ does say add and makes no mention of replace

The generic spell checking instructions might not make sense for Mac OSX.

From looking at FJF's Abiword for Mac page

It seems like Abiword should - thanks to the enchant spelling library -be
able to automatically use the German dictionaries provided by Mac OSX.
(The page is rather long but to quickly get to the relevant part I
searched within the page for the word "spell".)

If you haven't installed the Mac OSX Deutsch dictionary that might be
worth a try.

I hope this helps but I'm not a Mac user myself I just wanted to make sure
you got some kind of prompt response. I was able to search around and
find out this much, maybe you can continue searching and find a fix or
perhaps one of the other Mac users will be able to make a suggestions.
