I am fairly sure Abiword OpenOffice support (and NeoOffice) has been
described as a work in progress and we are glad it works at all. It would
be a big help if you could create a bug report in Abiword Buzilla and
attach a sample document which is causing problems. You might also have
better luck with a more recent version of Abiword. Alternatively Abiword
has excellent Rich Text Format (RTF) support and it might be a better
choice for document interchange although there are some known issues with
RTF support in OpenOffice. The good news is work is being done to add
support for the OpenDocument (ODT) format which should make for much
better
interoperability between Abiword and OpenOffice 2.

Is their format documented? (I'm assuming not, which makes it practically
imposible to support.) As they are selling a commericial product and
have paid developers and support staff to work on improving their
product it might be better to ask them to improve their support for RTF
and ODT.
Aren't they the people using Abiword for their own Microsoft Word support?
