Preferred method of creating Word-compatible documents?

AbiWord 2.2.3 (Linux)

When I go to save a document for the first time I'm given the option of
saving it as a Microsoft Word (.doc) file. However, the AbiWord Help
file recommends saving as an .rtf file. Is one method preferred over the
  other?
