About TEXT

I have downloaded AbiWord 2.2.3 and am still learning it and have
encountered a problem which is driving me up the wall. I have looked in all
the FAQ's and also read all the postings at the Forum and wonder if you can
please tell me what to do about the Text.

I don't know if I can explain it but I will try.

When you write a line of text and find that you have made an error in a word
and if you backspace on the error , you have to re-write the whole sentence
because the next letter disappears and then as you keep typing over what you
already have written , the old sentence disappears letter for letter as a
new letters are added in.

How does one stop this from happening?

Please someone tell me that you understand what I'm explaining.
It is highly frustrating trying to get my text typed in.
