Yep, some of the documentation is wrong due to it being outdated. For
example, the preferences menu item was moved last year (unix-only), but
the documentation was never updated to reflect that change.

I think you can turn this feature off with a profile change. Open up
your AbiWord.Profile file and in the custom scheme section (<Scheme
name="_custom_") try adding the following line:
EnableSmoothScrolling="0"
