saving as text

How does one save as ASCII text in AbiWord?

The SaveAs/Text option uses non-ASCII characters. It wd be
useful to give it a more detailed label (e.g., in
parentheses the ISO identifier, which I'm guessing is
8859-1) so that anyone who cares can know what they are
getting. On the plus side, it is clever in its conversion
of non-Latin1 characters. (So, *is* this a Latin1 export?)

I saw the ISCII text option. I was not sure if this was
really ASCII support disguised by some kind of anti-American
joke or it is really for Indian language support or
something else that I missed altogether. In either case, it
is not clever in exporting non-ASCII characters, simply
substituting a '?' for them rather than following standard
    conventions. (E.g., for “ or — etc.)

A reasonably 'clever' ASCII export wd be nice.

    Thank you,
    Alan Isaac
