I am new around here (so may be talking nonsense), but under
linux I separated 1.99.1 from my system-wide installation
of 1.9.1 by configuring using the "--prefix" option (see
configure --help), and specifying a directory in under
/home/username. I then did "make install" as user rather
than as root. The experimental abiword can then be run from
the /bin directory under the relevant /home sub-directory
without disturbing the system-wide files.
