Yuck. This is an upleasant one.
I tried this using a version of 1.0.4, I assume the behaviour is the same.
You can right click on the image and choose "Format Image".
It is in inches, which is why I say yuck.
Give me metric or give me pixels, but inches?!
Also you need to use the arrows to decrease the numbers, tying in value
has no effect. yuck.
If you want to know exactly how large an image will fit then you can find
out the size of your pages (usually written on the package) and take away
the margin size.
Failing that you could Format the image to be quite small and gradually
increase it until you start seeing some of the edge gettting cut off and
then reduce it again.

You might consider trying Abiword 2.0 which is due out soon, the current
prereleases are quite stable.
Version 2 has nice drag handles which allow you to easily resize an image,
which are a huge improvement (the dialog still sucks though, still inches,
no way for me to specify a fixed size in pixels).
Hope that helps
