Since I haven't seen any responses so far, I'll take a shot at trying to help
    with this.

I suspect the first piece of advice somebody would give you is to upgrade to
the latest (stable) version and see if you still get the problem. The latest
stable version is 1.0.6, I imagine that a Red Hat rpm exists for it
somewhere. Is that feasible for you?

In any case, maybe there are some other things to try, just to see where they
    lead:

       * If you close AbiWord, and reopen it with the same document, do you have
    the same problem?

       * If you close AbiWord, reopen it, and start typing a new document, do you
    get the same problem?

Why don't you send me a copy of the file (direct to me, not to the list), and
let me try opening (in AbiWord 1.99.something) (if the document is not
confidential, and not too long -- if it is a long document can you make a
shorter version that still exhibits the same problem?)
