My point here is that it is possible to create a binary release which
targets a specific distribution, e.g. RedHat 8, but to create a binary
release which will work on a variety of distributions... well, it's
possible, and I have done it the past for someone. Also static builds
should work pretty well across different distributions, but I haven't
    tried that.

Basically, AbiWord is a cross-platform and cross-distribution word
processor, which means we try to make it as easy as possible to build on
Win32, QNX and UNIX - we don't always succeed but we do our best. However,
we are not distributors, and our binary releases are limited to a few
    volunteer contributions.

If you need help building AbiWord from source, then we are always happy to
help. If you need help installing binary releases, then there's really
    very little we can do.

This is possible, and I do this with XAbiWord, but it's hard work and
would annoy those people who do have the libraries...

No. Please try AbiWord-1.1.1 when it comes out (next week).

    Ciao, Frank

ps. I can't even start an AbiWord session, let alone end one...
