I am replying this to my original message as the thread has become complicated.
I solved the problem finally when I read an email from someone helping me cure
the same trouble with Sodipodi. In his list of libpngs was a Mandrake rpm -
libpng3-static-devel. I had never heard of this but remembered an error message
saying that Abi could not build without static on this platform, so I installed
it and recompiled simply with ./configure, make and make install. Hey Presto, I
have Abiword working and loading pictures, and no complaints about incompatible
libpngs. Hope this might help others, and thank you all for helping me.
John
PS For some reason it will not register the Abiword clipart folder. Why should
this be?
