Hi Thomas,
It's a locale problem,the default character set for RH8 is Unicode. Abiword is
not Unicode-aware. Use any version of Abiword, the one that comes with RH8 is
fine.
The fix Red Hat gives in the release notes says start Abiword this way:
$ env LANG=C abiword
This removes all localization. I don't know if that will work for you, you
could also set your locale:
$ env LANG=de_DE abiword
This may be the better option, to get a complete German character set. I don't
know for sure, this is all new to me.
See http://ftp.ics.uci.edu/pub/ietf/http/related/iso639.txt and
http://userpage.chemie.fu-berlin.de/diverse/doc/ISO_3166.html
for country and language codes.
Use the 'locale' command to see what is installed on your system, 'man locale'
gives all the options.
Always read the release notes, for RH8 they are on CD1.
