I'd like to propose making GAL a module that is loaded at run-time. If
AbiGal.so is not found on the local system, we use a modified version of
Gabriel's curlhash downloader to download AbiGal.so from SourceForge (or
    mirror) to ~/.AbiSuite/AbiWord/modules.

Of course, this will require significant modifications to the AbiWord
source and AbiGal.so will have to supported for all GNOME platforms
(solaris, HP, *BSD, Linux x86 & PPC) but I think this is doable within the
    1.2 timeframe.

One additional benefit of this approach will be that alternative
application libraries could be used instead with zero effort.
