Opening other documents

I am having difficulty with 0.99.2 in debian/linux 2.2
I tried the plugins but when the document is opened the application
freezes. When I remove the plugins, I can open .abw docs but other
docs, ie .html, .doc, .php open a blank new page or give me an error
message about the file containing 'bogus' information.
How do you open .doc files or .txt files with abiword?
