    Hello Dom,

    Thanks for your prompt reply.

    Here's what I did:

I renamed a utf-8 encoded html file to txt so that I could open it
as encoded text. I was able to open it as you suggested, but I have
       two problems / questions:

       1) Do any "encoded" files have to be "text" files? Why can't they
be saved as .html or .abw for that matter? Can't these also be
       encoded as utf-8?

       2) I have tried inputting utf-8 - Unicode text (using Keyman 5.0)
into the file I opened in this manner. No luck at all. I can paste
utf-8 text that I have prepared on other Unicode compliant software
(e.g. Word or UltraEdit) and paste it into Abiword, but this is a
       very poor solution.

Can any one tell me whether I should be able to key utf-8 encoded
Unicode characters directly into Abiword, as one can even with the
       primitive Notepad.

Again, I am running Abiword under Win 2000.

    TIA for your help.
