Yes you can do this with abiword and even get your cyrillic text spell
checked if it's Russian or Ukranian.

What you need to do is find some cryllic Type 1 or True Type fonts and
install them in the correct directory. I guess you're running on Linux?
See the unixfonts document on where all this goes.

Next you need the appropriate spell checking library. Check out the
abispell collection on sourceforge.net.

The on tools set your language to Russian/Ukranian on tools/language set
the your fonts to your cryllic collection and type away.
