Of course, AbiWord is a step more civilised than the majority: most
programs don't even ask! But I agree. It should be and option which is
activated upon the request of the user.

This is what I would say. Make it so the user must make a conscious choice.
If at all possible, it would make sense to make that choice easily
reversible later on as well. Operations such as this should be easily
reversed by the user. Too few programs actually operate that way these
days.
