Subject: Typographical dashes and quotes, fonts not WYSIWYG

I have installed the Abiword GTK version 0.9.6.1 linux i386 RPM
distribution, and although the program seems to function well in most
respects, I have a couple of questions which do not appear to be answered
in the FAQ file.
How do I enter "typographical" quotes and dashes, that is to say,
different opening and closing quotes, and different glyphs for hyphen, en
and em dashes?
When using the Times New Roman font, for example, I find that the length
of the hyphen that appears on the screen is shorter than the one that
prints, and so text is actually aligned differently on the print compared
to what is seen on-screen.
I actually have a similar problem with Sun Staroffice which I have also
tried on this system. (In fact in Staroffice, I can get the typographical
dashes, but the em dash, for example, seems to have incorrect metrics and
overlaps the next character when printed--while on-screen, it is not
displayed at all!) Perhaps this indicates that the above problems are not
directly related to Abiword. Nevertheless, the problem is manifested in
Abiword.
I installed the abiword fonts, and so I assume abiword is using those
fonts (it does not appear to list other fonts on the system), which would
indicate that the problem does not appear to be associated with faulty
fonts on my system. (Unless the X server (XFree86) is perhaps using a
different font to the one Abiword is using?) The X server is running on
the same host as Abiword, and I see that Abiword has added its fonts to
the X font path, so I assume the same fonts are available to X and
Abiword.
Unfortunately I am not entirely familiar with the internals of the
postscript and X font systems, so it is beyond my ability to fully
diagnose the problem. Therefore I hope someone more familiar with these
issues might be able to explain what is happening here, or offer some
advice on how to diagnose the problem.
All advice is appreciated.
Regards,
