I hope you are aware of the keyboard shortcuts
Save Ctrl+S
Save As Ctrl+Shift+S
(dont have a copy of Abi in front of my, but that is the way it is
supposed to be, ill have to fix it if its not like that).

File an RFE (Request for Enhancement) in Bugzilla
http://bugzilla.abisource.com
that way they developers will remember to consider if i they can spare
the time.

Again please file an RFE in Bugzilla
http://bugzilla.abisource.com
explain as clearly as possible what exactly you mean

Abi has this already (natively i think, but maybe not in your version or
on MS Windows yet)
this should be in v1.0
There is also an ImageMagick Plugin which adds support for lots of file
formats, you might consider giving it a try.

Not all of them are so short as to be useless
In Gnome/GTK you can tear away the menu let it float, so you dont have
to click through so many menus. It may not be particularly useful but
its not doing any harm either.

If you can program or can convince/pay someone who can, patches are
always welcome.

Abiword strives to be word processing for Everyone but try not to expect
too much.
