    Greg,

I am having the same problem described by Devon.

However, I followed your suggestion, but this did
    not solve the problem.

I should also mention that I just replaced the existing
fonts with TTF-Microsoft fonts as described below at the
    end of this message.

    Thanks,
    Barry Skidmore

    Hello, Barry!
I have , for my part, resolved the problem ... adopting the TTF-Windows'
    fonts!
It is possible with the method given by Anne Parker and Gabe de Jong some
    months ago.
I think your fonts are in << /usr/local/share/AbiSuite/fonts >>. Ok!

    1) Verify you have "ttftool and "ttfadmin.sh" in the AW binary principal
    directory,
        where is the wrapper "abiword".
    2) Verify you have in << /usr/bin >> "ttmkfdir" and "mkfontdir" (you need
    them here).
    3) Go to folder where is directory << fonts >> (the AbiWord fonts dir).
    4) Rename this directory << fontsORI >> (for "origin"!...).
    5) Create a new directory << fonts >> in the same place.
    6) Copy-paste the << .../windows/system/fonts >> to the new dir << fonts >>
    .
    7) If you have that, eliminate all "non-ttf fonts" (.fon)
    8) In a console, as "root", from that directory, run the commands :
    ............."/fonts# ttmkfdir -o fonts.scale"
    ............."/fonts# mkfontdir"
.............(in order to obtain here the both files : fonts.scale and
    fonts.dir)
    9) Return to binary AbiWord dir, where is "ttftool" , and run:
    ............."/bin# ttfadmin.sh  /usr/local/share/AbiSuite/fonts"
    .............and it is finished.

When you will lauch AbiWord you will have all the good "ttf" fonts  used
    by
    Windows... and singularly your arial!...
