    skanky embedded objects! MathML is the future, (LaTeX is right here right
    now).

    Much as i like Abiword, Have you tried Open Office? (StarOffice is related
    to Open Office).
    It has an equation editor and i expect it can handle embedded maths
    objects, I dont think it does LaTeX though.

    Rather than making a front end to LaTeX, LyX might be suitable for your
    needs. It is well worth your while searching for existing (La)TeX based
    programs before writing your own frontend.

    As for WordPerfect support i dont know how much the file format has
    changed for WordPerfect 2000 but abiword does have some support for WordPerfect 6 & 7
    so you should ask the guy who wrote the importer really nicely, but
    dont expect handling embedded math objects anytime soon.
