Hmm maybe its a memory leak.
if you can get the detailed error message (windows usually has a button
marked Details>>) and send it to the developer mailing list

Star Office/Open Office are available for windows and unix. if you are
willing to use Unix you can get KOffice.
There is also a system known as TeX, which is brilliant for giving you
exact layout and typesetting, there are various free versions available
and its even used to do the layout for books.
I used to really like using ClarisWorks on the Mac, but i think you had
to pay for it (it came with the computer).
