I agree.
AbiWord also automatically associates itself with the .rtf extension in 0.9.5
This looks like a bad move and is the kind of behaviour generally regarded
as udesirable, (in some newsgroups I frequent in usenet).
However, after uninstalling AbiWord to see if it would undo the associations
and return to the previous ones (it didn't), I noticed during reinstallation
of AbiWord that there is an option during installation to enable association
with .rtf and .doc files. You can uncheck this during installation to avoid
the behaviour.
I didn't notice it the first time I installed, and the behaviour is enabled
by default.
Perhaps it is important enough that the choice should be on a dialogue
screen by itself during installation, and the user required to make a choice
(yes/no) of whether this behaviour accepted before the installation proceeds?
At least this would prevent people falling into the trap of finding they
have unwittingly made an unwelcome change to their computer settings.

For anyone without a utility like goback, it's not difficult to change the
associations back again in Win 95/98. Just find a file with a .doc
extension, hold down the SHIFT key whilst right-clicking on the file. In
the dialogue box which opens there should be an entry (under the Open entry)
which says "open with". Click this and you are presented with a list of
programmes. Just click the one you want to open the file with, and also
tick the box that says "always open with ...", and you can permanently
restore the association you want.
Cheers, John Selby.
