Don't worry about that, that's not my intention (although it certainly
must seem like it is, and I understand that). I, personally, don't mind
that non-PNG support is still missing, as I can use other software to do
the job and move on to my next task.
However, on the OLPC side, I would even prefer seeing some warning that
says "hey your JPG is converted to PNG, beware". Although it is kind of
running away from the issue, it's still better than nothing, at least
"until this bug is fixed", imo. Kind of like a "sorry, not fully
implemented yet, the size might go up". Yes, this is not a solution. And
it's one more of those dialogs. I'm certainly sure it is better to do
this than have this image insertion button not say anything and behave
"incorrectly" silently on a ressource-limited machine.
My concerns *are* the OLPC, no kidding. The example I gave you (my aunt
and the ~110 Mib file) my was just that, an example (because I had to
give some kind of proof on "how" this is dangerous). I worked around the
issue and this particular case does not come into play.
I, personally, use Writer for image-heavy publications. If Writer or
Kword was on the OLPC and had a similar bug, I would do the same, and
talk to upstream about it (in this case, you), as upstream is certainly
the ones I would go see first (and most familiar with Abiword's code?).

Now, if I have to take this to Redhat or whatever company for it to get
fixed for good, where is the most appropriate place for me to bring this
issue up to them? Or will I have to email a Cc of this discussion to
technology@laptop.org directly?
I don't think I should continue on and on, but I definitely wanted to
clear this out: I don't want to "blackmail" you folks, and I would
benefit little from this JPG support. It just struck me when I saw that
laptop in front of me; I did not want to see this issue "forgotten".
Ah, I'll stop, I'm painting a bike shed.
