I thought you might find this interesting. I left the wrappers on for
traceability. The outer message was sent to the technology list for the
Seattle School District (where I worked for 4 years). The inner message
is a much larger list (~1400 international subscribers) for educators
interested in technology. Note the personal recommendations of those
who posted. It should also be noted that Mark Ahlness is the list
owner/moderator for TICTECH. The Seattle School District is officially
a closed Microsoft-only shop.

If you're looking for a FREE word processing program, check this one out.
Multi-platform, a snap to download and install, compatible with MS Word,
what more could you ask? I like it better than the OpenOffice word
processor. - Mark

Subject: [WWWEDU] Open Source Word Processing Software: AbiWord

AbiWord is a word processor similar to Microsoft Word, only it
doesn't cost a penny!

Programmers who encourage free software (called Open Source)
created AbiWord. Using this software, you can read and write Word
documents. You can create tables, lists, images and styles. You can
even mail merge.

Best of all, AbiWord is multi-platform-- use it on Windows, Linux and
other operating systems. A Mac version is on the way.

At a wee 4.9 megabytes, AbiWord works on geezer computers. For me, it
looked and acted like a skinny Word, but with an intuitive Mac feel.
Check it out!

About AbiWord
The Beginning
Like most Open Source projects, AbiWord started as a cathedral, but
has become more like a bazaar. AbiWord is part of a larger project
known as AbiSource, which was started by the SourceGear Corporation.
The goal of the project was the development of a cross-platform, Open
Source office suite beginning with AbiWord, the project's word
processor.

SourceGear released the source code to AbiWord and a developer
community quickly formed around the project. SourceGear has since
then stopped working on the project.

The developer community has since then continued to make improvements
and increase the quality of AbiWord. Version 1.0 was released in
April 2002, followed by Version 2.0 in September 2003. Currently,
we're all working hard towards our future Version 2.2 release.

What Makes AbiWord Different?
AbiWord is unique among word processors in its drive to become a
fully cross-platform word processor. Our source code is carefully
written so that AbiWord will run on virtually any operating system
with a minimum of time spent on porting. This combined with our
support for internationalization (the ability to run AbiWord in many
languages) gives AbiWord a massive potential user-base.

Currently we run on most UNIX systems, Windows 95 and later, QNX
Neutrino 6.2. We also have a MacOS X native port in the way (you can
still use the UNIX version on MacOS X if you want). There used to be
a BeOS port, but that version has been gone unmaitained for too long
to consider it as still alive; we dreamt that it was any different,
so if you want to help, feel free to contact us.
