Actually, I disagree here; at least where linux is concerned, there are
no other solutions that satisfy me. Which is why I keep coming back to
check on Abiword.

It doesn't disappoint me as a product. I am just anxious for all of the
features to be complete.
BTW, last night I decided to go ahead and try to compile abiword, even
with the errors in the tarballs, just in case they were benign. Sure
enough, it compiled and appears to work. So now I have to apologize for
the firestorm.
